Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest specific calls from the official, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
