The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
