Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
