In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
