Gavin Newsom States He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom stated when pressed about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary
Newsom has stepped forward as a notable critic of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would boost the party's congressional seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed plans to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened suspending the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," Duffy said, after a recent deadly accident in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that resulted in fatalities and four injuries.
Newsom's office highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to receive a commercial driver's license under federal law.
Duffy had earlier indicated he was holding back $40 million from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office responded in a recent statement responding to Duffy's threats. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Polling Data and Political Future
A this month's study found that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.
He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The thought that a individual who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the American people."
