Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined acronym came to light several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by health professionals such as child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for doctors to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that violations are ongoing. Authorities rejects these claims, just as it refutes each claim it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what unity looks like.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it was formerly known for. A contest that once promoted harmony has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
