Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials voiced anger after former President Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in armed forces or defense roles.
"As we did, you all took an vow to protect and uphold this founding document," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that violate the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Angry Response
The video message appeared to provoke a angry reply from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Answer
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a combined announcement censuring the remarks.
"Political violence has no position in America," they wrote. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our country with tremendous loyalty and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the security of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme digital publications and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the statement continued.
Representatives' Firm Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who love this United States and took an pledge to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the president views it punishable by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "The entire nation must come together and censure the president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Political Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the capital punishment of government members."
He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the government instructing troops to defy commands, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the language and decide all that."
White House Response
During a administration briefing on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the official declared. "There are active officials of the federal government who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the executive's legal commands."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
