A Story of Surprising Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I assumed to book accommodation when I arrived, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. Not knowing how to proceed and growing worried, I caught a city-bound bus and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the evening in an establishment operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more people who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared lost as a woman noticed me wandering around downtown and inquired if I was OK. I explained my predicament and immediately she said I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at the local university – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: one filled rolls she had from her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and a secure location to rest for the evening.
Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. In those days I existed within my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain very grateful.
I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her good deed abundantly. The world needs more people like that woman.
